How to read it, with examples
How to read it
At 00:05 UTC both lines are set to 100: price, and open interest divided by circulating supply (the same as open interest over market cap). At every five-minute close the reading checks which line is higher. above means price moved from under the ratio line to over it at that close; below is the reverse; none is any other checked close. The first move away from 100 each day is not a crossing, and a missing close starts the comparison again. In plain terms, above means price has gained more since 00:05 than the open-interest share has.
Use a crossing as one condition beside others, such as funding, the hour's change in open interest or a volatility rank, and compare what followed with the same markets' closes without one.
What it does not prove
A crossing is not a trade signal. It happens about nine times a day per market, and no test has measured what follows it on its own.
More limits
Before June 2026 open interest arrives once every five minutes, so no crossing can be finer than five minutes. The day starts at 00:05, not 00:00, because open interest at exactly midnight is often missing in the archive. Binance's chart scales each line to the window on screen, so its crossings differ; the chart-style crossing follows that drawing.
Technical details
Registry definition
Daily price versus OI/supply crossing, utc_daily_first_close_price_ratio.v1. Both series equal 100 at the exact 00:05 UTC close each day. Above/below means a strict side reversal at a five-minute close; none means a valid sampled close without a reversal. Equality retains the prior strict side with relative tolerance 1e-10. First departure and daily resets are not crossings. Missing pairs break continuity; missing daily reference makes the day absent. Other minutes are absent. Binance historical queries only, derived from recorded inputs without re-extraction; not proof of original-time availability or trading edge. Match evidence carries the event; raw snapshots do not. Record queries retain one-hour episode deduplication; prevalence counts raw matching closes. Live monitoring and automatic discovery are unavailable.
